Rep. Murphy Named Legislator of Year for Fire Protection Advocacy

Today, State Representative Mike Murphy (R-Springfield) was honored by the Illinois Association of Fire Protection Districts (IAFPD) as the 2019 Legislator of the Year. IAFPD is the primary advocacy group for fire protection districts in Illinois. Murphy was recognized for his support of the fire service at IAFPD’s Fire Service Luncheon held at the Peoria Civic Center.

“We all know how important our fire services are, but it can be easy to take their importance for granted since most of us will rarely need to call on them personally,” said Murphy. “Particularly in rural communities that may rely on volunteers, ensuring they have the resources they need to have well-trained and equipped fire service crews is imperative.

“I want to thank IAFPD for this recognition. It has been my honor to advocate for critical fire service initiatives and I look forward to lending my voice in support of our fire services and first responders in the future as well.”

During the recently concluded spring session, Murphy sponsored and supported several pieces of legislation to promote the efficient and effective operation of fire services. For instance, HB 2854 updates firefighter apprentice regulations to allow for greater hiring flexibility and HB 271 aids rural fire districts in the public bidding process for contracts.

Murphy also sponsored SB 1894, which allows the children of fallen first responders to honor their fallen parent with a special license plate denoting their service.
