Murphy Says Structural Reform Needed after Gov.’s Budget Address

SPRINGFIELD – Today, Governor JB Pritzker gave his Budget Address to a joint session of the 101st General Assembly. State Representative Mike Murphy (R-Springfield) released the following statement in response:

“Illinois needs significant structural reform to address our fiscal issues, but I hardly heard a word of that in the Governor’s budget proposal. His only answer continues to be to raise taxes. He even suggested today that funding for essential services, like those for K-12 and higher education could be held hostage if the graduated tax amendment isn’t passed in November. Resorting to hyperbole and basing a spending proposal on hypothetical tax revenues is no way to budget or to govern.

“I hope the Governor remembers that when we worked together last year we were able to enact desperately needed job-creating reforms, and since that happened, revenues have exceeded expectations. If we work on more job-creating reforms that unleash the economic potential of downstate Illinois and address structural spending reform, we can meet our essential service obligations without increasing taxes. I’ll say it again, I stand ready to work together.”
