Representative Mike Murphy was born in Springfield and raised in Divernon Illinois where he attended Divernon High School. He served three years in the United States Army as an Air Traffic Controller with his last year of active duty served in the Republic of South Korea. He served one year in the Illinois National Guard while attending Eastern Illinois University.
Representative Murphy worked in the restaurant business in several locations before moving back to his hometown of Divernon in 1985. He served as Operations Manager for Lincoln Land Oil Company and Chief Operating Officer for O’Donuts, Inc. prior to being the owner operator of Charlie Parker’s Diner.
Representative Murphy served on the Divernon School Board and Divernon Village Board. He was a charter member and served on the initial board of directors for Springfield Local First. He is on the greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce board of directors. He served six years on the Sangamon County Citizens Efficiency Commission as vice chairman and chairman. He was elected to represent the 99th District in 218.
Representative Murphy and his wife Cindy have two children, son Bobby (wife Christina) and daughter Megan (husband Jody). They have five grandchildren. Mike and his wife reside in Springfield, Illinois.
